Takata's Lyrics

The evolution of Takata was a complete surprise.  He began as a niggling thought and somehow wiggled his way in—though he doesn't truly show up until Every Which Way but Dead.  His role is still evolving, but he's been whispering in my ear, and I've done my best to scribe what he's dictating.  I think some of it's getting lost in the translation, so his lyrics stand a good chance of enduring countless rewrites and tweakings.  But here they are, for those who are interested.  The italicized sections can be heard only on the vamp track.

Footprints Of The Ghost

The ghost is leaving footprints

In the sunshine

Past the gate

Choices made in ignorance

Lead to aberrant

Twists of fate

Pain looks for a vessel

Tracking footprints

for a mate

And she goes . . .

Dancing. . . .

Barometer is falling  (Rain in the desert)

Sun rises red  (Out of time, out of place)

Trouble is coming  (Look at her go)

Dancing to dangerous music  (The footprints of a ghost)

Rain is falling  (Rain in the desert)

Sun rises red

Pain looks for a vessel  (He will take you if he can)

Don't look forward  (Don't stop dancing)

Don't look back  (Or the worlds are damned)

Didn't know the burden

Didn't mean

To give you wings

Faultless soul will damn the world

morally wrong

Might not be sin

Barometer is falling  (Rain in the desert)

Sun rises red  (Out of time, out of place)

Pain's become your savoir  (Don't stop dancing)

Refuse to follow where you're led  (Dancing)

The line begins to blur

When you look

Too far ahead

When you're the footprints of a ghost  (No one told me)

Red Ribbons

You are my secret.

You will lead to my fall.

But I want you to know,

Before truth's past recall.

Self-cursed to watch you,

By a choice made in sin.

Didn't know the cost I'd paid,

Till I saw you again.

A thief in the spotlight,

Stealing motes of your life.

Lying that you gave me them.

A double-edged knife.

Hear you sing through the curtain. (You're mine, in some small fashion.)

See you smile through the glass. (You're mine, though you know it not.)

Wipe your tears in my thoughts. (You're mine, bond born of passion.)

No amends for the past. (You're mine, yet wholly you.)

Didn't know it would consume me. (By your will.)

No one said the hurt would last.  (By your will.)

No one told me. (By your will.)

No one told me.

When desire's sold for freedom,

And need's exchanged for fame,

Those bargains made in ignorance,

Turn to blood-stained dreams of shame.

Red ribbons bind us,

Though no blood has been spilt.

No one told me they were wove of thorns.

No one told me of the guilt.

No one told me bonds of blood,

Were too poisonous to wilt

Realized I was empty,

When a memory kept my place.

Left looking in the window.

Red ribbons hide my face.

By way of my will. (By way of your will.)

By way of my will. (By way of your will.)

By way of my will. (By way of your will.)

The Long Breath

I can’t read the map that shows your salvation

Torn by your claim to a bloodless frustration

I stole it from you.  It’s smudged and it’s burned

The roads don’t connect, no matter how turned

And it don’t lead to nowhere

Cause you live in hell

But it’s all that I’ve got

So I’ll keep turning

Turn, turn around

See me here, lost, forsworn

A fistful of roses

Long wilted and torn

Struck to the quick with a hope-bloodied thorn

While you wait for me

My mind’s turning

The dust in your veins is an unseen ocean

Turned as the tide by the pull of emotion

Leaves lose their green to show their true hue

Fallen sun, risen moon, the same do to you

My passion, my fear

Shift to show what remains

Your shadows of truth

Keep me turning

The man with the smile, he says it’s okay

We’ll all live together, in kinship today

I see in your eye, the lie that remains

Half-truths unspoken.  There’s safety in chains

Loosing your passion

To live free of pain

Will twist you to madness

Am I turning?

Turn, turn around

God, why do I stay?

Blinded by rapture

Death’s subtle decay

Sooner be dead, than your protege

Turn, turn around

Spiral helix falls prey

To the taste of your soul

Consummate betray

Why is it wrong, to want you this way?

Turn, turn around

Turn around

See me . . .

Waiting for you.

Shattered Sight

A spirit is chained when alone and apart

Though one graced with flesh, one with a heart

Can search

Can love

Can find

Can lose

But being without flesh, I only can choose

Grandfather reborn into his child's son

That is how it is usually done

We looked down through time, from God's mighty peak

Together we pondered, "To which life should we leap?"

Wanting to slip from the family line's woes

I jumped to a new one

You kept to the old

I learned too late what I lost with the rest

I loved you best

I loved you best

So I chose, and I leapt, and I promptly forgot

Amnesia, the blessing of angels was wrought

Left with a want that I couldn't explain

As I struggled to speak, and learn my new name

Is it no wonder the newborn cry?

The choice was real

The chance a lie

Fragments of you, splinters in dreams

Analysis tears them apart at the seams

For shattered sight clears only when in God's Keep

But you never will wait

My harsh words cut you deep

Spirits kept unknowing, lifetimes left to fill

But I loved you then

And I love you still

Searching through the eons to make the wrong right

Scent triggers memory to mend shattered sight

Splinters weave together, pieces fall into place

We both would remember if I touched your face

Sift the clues from the dust, from my lives, of my will

I loved you then

I love you still
